Around one o'clock I got a text from Mondai: <I'm really, really sorry. Please give me a chance to make it up to you. Drinks tonight? Any time, any place.>

I waited an hour before replying. Petty? I'll let you decide.

<Hana. 8pm.>

Pop and I rolled back home close to dinner. We'd stopped at a market on the way back, picked up a bunch of stuff to cook for dinner. Chika, the tsukumogami, Pop, and I made several dishes, far more than we were capable of finishing off that night. I'd be eating leftovers for a day or two, easy. Not that I was complaining.

The tsukumogami were back to their old selves. Whatever issues they were having with each other had receded. According to Chika, they'd behaved like angels for Niko while Pop and I were out.

I wasn't closer to figuring out how to deal with Madara's disappearance, though I'd nearly resigned myself to reaching out to Kazuo. As surprising as it sounded, out of all of my acquaintances, he knew more about me than everyone except Mei and Pop. And since none of them had any ideas about what to do next, Kazuo was next in line.

I left Mondai out of the mix. He already knew about my kitsune side, but I wasn't prepared to reveal all of my cards just yet, no matter how much I liked him.

Kazuo agreed to meet me later that night.

"You heading out?" Pop asked.

"Meeting a friend."

"Be safe."

I kissed him on top of his head. "Be back late. Going to blow off steam."

He chuckled. "Have a great time. You've earned it."
